There is one curious detail. Almost exactly in the middle of the photo, there is Palazzo Balbi and something shiny grows out of its rear roof.

Or it could be the tip of a mobile phone base station tower located somewhere behind it, but who would allow such an eyesore as a freestanding GSM tower?

Eventually found out that they added transmitters direct to the palace's chimney, as seen here:

Serving as the Veneto government building, she probably warrants an own base station to carry all the bureaucratic chatter...

As an added bonus, while checking the antenna issue on Google Earth overhead view, I noticed the mooring of Palazzo Balbi is brim full of water taxis. Not that shiny powerboats are inherently bad, but...

...after a series of official warnings about the shortage of city funds, those poor civil servants may wish to make an example (like walking the vast distance to the nearest vaporetto station just to show you are really tirelessly toiling for public good).
