Coins on the Rail

The deck of a boat can serve a multitude of purposes.
In my October 2nd post I mentioned that the forward gondolier on a traghetto tosses coins onto the deck, taking and making change on the spot.

Here's a shot I took on board one of these canal-crossing ferries at the Servizio Gondola San Tomà.

This gondolier's got a chamois for washdowns and a spare dockline sitting on the foredeck.   And of course, he's got his coinage separated nicely along the rail.
I see that he and I also have similar tastes in footwear.

Rirding the traghetto is apparently a very complicated matter if we consider this instruction table!
